Ivette Flores began her association with the fight for Surfer’s Myelopathy Awareness after her husband became a victim of the condition while they were surfing in Hawaii in March 2007. Ivette graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelors degree in Psychology and received her Masters in Public Health from the University of Southern California. Driven by her knowledge of health and her passion for disease prevention, Ivette founded the Surfer’s Myelopathy Foundation in efforts to raise awareness of SM in the medical and surf communities, to help those affected, and to minimize the severity of future cases. She currently works to develop the Surfer’s Myelopathy Foundation as well as managing the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California.

Pegah FaedPegah Faed, MPH, CHES

Pegah Faed joined the fight for the prevention of Surfer’s Myelopathy with the Foundation to increase research done on this condition. Pegah graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelors degree in Public Health. She continued on to receive her Masters in Public Health from the University of Southern California in 2007. In addition to co-founding this foundation, Pegah is a management analyst for the Pasadena Public Health Department’s Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Outreach Program. Upon completion of her doctorate degree in Preventive Care, Pegah hopes to increase research and education done on Surfer’s Myelopathy.

Katie Dickey has joined the fight for prevention of Surfer’s Myelopathy with the Foundation to increase awareness among the surfing populations and the physicians that treat the patients with the condition. She has a Bachelor’s of Science from Allegheny College and completed her Master’s of Public Health from the University of Southern California in 2007. She is currently working on her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA and hopes to raise awareness and interest in research among health professionals and practicing physicians.

Lawrence Ham joined the Surfer’s Myelopathy Foundation in hopes of better understanding the risks, causes, and manifestations of surfer’s myelopathy in order to prevent onset and improve prognosis. Lawrence graduated from USC with a Masters of Public Health in 2008. A serial entrepreneur with a focus on nonprofit and social enterprises, Lawrence has a passion for working with vulnerable and underserved populations. He aims to build partnerships, redefine paradigms, and combine resources to create unique opportunities while bringing stronger management principles to the nonprofit sector.

The mission of SMF is to increase the awareness of surfer’s myelopathy in order to provide support and to promote injury prevention, research, and treatment.
